Born 11 December 1910 in Maryhill, Glasgow, Professor Sir Robert (Bob) Grieve became a civil engineer then town planner and is credited with saving a significant number of lives with his strategy for air raid shelters before the Glasgow Blitz. He was a ScotWays Director from 1949 and our Honorary President from 1965 until 1995. He was President of the Scottish Mountaineering Club and Scottish Countryside Rangers Association, Chief Planner at the Scottish Office, the first Chair of Town & Regional Planning at Glasgow University and in 1965, was appointed as the first Chair of the Highlands & Islands Development Board now HIE. An advocate of National Parks he was a member of Friends of Loch Lomond and many other organisations dedicated to the intelligent expansion and preservation of our countryside.

He was also one of the visitors to the famous Craigallian Fire where many Glasgow and Clydebank youngsters would go in their free time and where the legendary Creagh Dhu, Lomond and Ptarmigan climbing clubs were born.
