Donald Grant Moir (1902-1986)
Originally from Banchory, he was an early activist and Honorary Secretary in the Scottish Youth Hostels Association, another organisation with which ScotWays has had close links over the years.
He was secretary to the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and an authority on early maps of Scotland and editor of The Early Maps of Scotland to 1850 published in 1986 by a committee of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He also served on Sir Douglas Ramsay’s 1945 Scottish National Parks Survey Committee along with Fraser Darling.
What of his involvement with ScotWays? He was a director and creator of the popular book Scottish Hill Tracks. First published in 1947 in two volumes, Northern Scotland and Southern Scotland it built upon the work of Walter Smith’s Hill Paths in Scotland: The Hill Paths, Drove Roads and Cross Country Routes in Scotland, from the Cheviots to Sutherland first published in 1924. Moir’s book is now in its fifth edition and still available to buy.
