Route Description

This is a complex cross-country route through a landscape which has changed markedly in recent years due to active forest development.

From Buccleuch Farm, go south by the farm track up the Rankle Burn, passing Phenzhopehaugh and entering the forest to reach Baldhill (ruin) at NT327114. Turn south across initially open ground, keeping east of the burn. After 500m, cross the drstone dyke and enter the forestry. Continue south, following lines through the trees to join the main forest road at NT329105. Turn left uphill for 250m then fork right at the wide quarried junction (NT304104) just north of the source of the Aithouse Burn. Follow the forest road  down by this burn to Craik village.
Continue southeast from Craik to cross the bridge over the Borthwick Water. On reaching the road junction at NT353079, turn sharp right and follow the public road to its end opposite Howpasley. Here instead of crossing a bridge (NT346075), a gate on the left leads onto a good if steepening vehicle track with a barrier after 1km and a T-junction beyond . Cross the track and, bearing slightly left, follow a grass ride forking right and traversing the slopes of Rashy Hill leading southeast up to the old Rut Head gate posts at NT358062. Go due east, following the faint line of the burn to meet the forest road at NT360062. Turn left and go by Lairhope, and then a minor road to Falnash, to reach the A7 north of Teviothead.
