Route Description

From Dryhope at the northern end of St Mary’s Loch, head south crossing the Yarrow Water to pick up the Southern Upland Way (SUW) which follows the eastern side of the loch to Tibbie Shiels Inn (NT240205). Leaving the SUW, go south along the east side of the Loch of the Lowes, and then up to the east of the Riskinhope Burn and over Pikestone Rig, rejoined by the SUW at NT243176. Continue to the saddle east of Peniestone Knowe and take the southerly path on the SUW down to the west of Scabcleuch Burn to the valley road at Scabcleuch (NT246144). Follow the SUW southwest for approximately 4.5km till reaching the bridge over the Ettrick Water to Nether Phawhope (NT211112). Go southwest to NT209104, then southeast by forest track to the Steps of Glendearg, the watershed at NT220092 between the two burns of the same name at the source of the White Esk. The route continues down the west side of the burn, which is crossed to Glendearg and its access road, to reach the B709 at NT239050, just south of the Seismological Station, 8km north of Eskdalemuir.
