Route Description

Our route description travels in the opposite direction to that taken by drovers.

Start on the A924, 0.5km east of Straloch at the access to Glenfernate Estate. Go north by Glenfernate Lodge up Gleann Fearnach for 7km to Daldhu. Continue generally north for a further 12km along the track to Fealar Lodge, then take a path west to Glen Tilt, reaching it 300m northeast of the Falls of Tarf. The main Glen Tilt track is reached by crossing the Allt Garbh Buidhe, which is usually straightforward but can be dangerous in spate.

Heritage Information

This old road is another track drovers took to get their cattle to the Tryst at Kirkmichael. The Old Statistical Account (1791-99) refers to Kirkmichael's annual fair - in the middle of the eighteenth century this was one of Scotland's principal cattle markets, lasting for several days and sometimes a week.

The route was mapped by Roy in his Military Survey 1747-55 and so must have been well-used at that time.
