Route Description
Start from Barleyknowe Road to the west of a mobile phone mast, and follow this old track northeast along the side of two fields, then continue uphill on the same alignment to join and follow a small section of doglegging road. Where the road bends again, there’s a collection of gates, and a sign indicating the way onwards leads to Edgefield, Mayfield and Newlandrigg; take the equestrian gate on the RHS of the large vehicular gate. The path takes you up and by Camp Wood, passing the ancient settlement for which it is named, to reach the D’arcy-to-Southside road.

Heritage Information
Gorebridge developed during the eighteenth century as a result of limeworkings, gunpowder production and coal-mining. A network of tracks provided access between the hub of Gorebridge and the smaller settlements and various workplaces; this route passes quarrying and limekiln sites on its way down to Gorebridge. It also passes older remnants of human activity - the marked settlement on the summit of Camp Wood Hill is a prehistoric hillfort with associated enclosures; it is a scheduled monument of national significance.
This old track features in three of the routes in Gorebridge Walkers' publication 10 Walks from Gorebridge Station, which can be downloaded from the Gorebridge Community Development Trust website. A section of this old route also coincides with the Vogrie Trail, developed as part of the Tyne Esk Trails network, itself part of South of Scotland Countryside Trails (SoSCT), a project which developed a 350km network of routes specifically for horse-riders and walkers. For information about current accessibility, visit the SoSCT webpage.
