Route Description

Through gate by Ecclaw Farm and follow grassy track and/or wall through three fields. At corner of third field (NT765674) there are steps built into the wall. Cross the field on bearing 158 degrees to join track. Follow this track by side of fields, or between hedges, to A6112. Please note that at NT799637 there is a deep burn to cross which is too wide to jump.

Heritage Information

This route was introduced to the Heritage Paths project as a possible Roman Road. Interesting place-name evidence is provided by the presence of Roadside Woods (cNT785652) nowhere near the present day road network, yet either side of this route.

A further remnant of this old road can reportedly be followed further southeast through Fawcett Wood along a track which has exposed patches of irregular flagging. It is then said to continue along a low ploughed out mound and field boundaries to NT837605 near Greenburn. This section mostly coincides with the parish boundary shown on the 1937-61 series of OS 1:25,000 mapping. This correlation with boundaries is another feature of old roads. Crachoctrestrete as a boundary and as a road is referred to by name in medieval charters.
