Route Description

This old route is in the main now used by a spur of the Speyside Way, so that way-marked long-distance route forms the basis for the following route description. We’d very much welcome any information relating to the accessibility of the older line where it differs from the Speyside Way.

To leave Tomintoul on the Speyside Way, head to the north end of the village to pick up a track heading northwest which crosses the Conglass Water by a footbridge, then steeply uphill to reach the minor road to Croughly. Only follow this road northeast for 600m to reach a path heading east, which then joins this old track running north then northeast across an expanse of peat bog known as the Feith Musach where a map and compass may be required in bad weather. Pass just east of Cairn Ellick, then head northwest to Carn Daimh. Continue north on the west side of Carn Liath, and descend to the minor public road near Upper Castleton and the Glenlivet Distillery. Cross the River Livet and go north by Deskie and the Hill of Deskie, then by the east side of Cairnacay to descend to Auldich farm and the B9008 just south of Bridge of Tommore.
