Route Description
South of Rannoch station, cross the railway at the level crossing, go west round the head of Loch Laidon. After 1km, at NN414577, fork right into the forest and follow the road going southwest parallel to the loch for almost 4km to its end at NN378550. From here a rudimentary path follows the line of the pylons west for approximately 4km across rough ground, crossing several streams. Pick up a more obvious track at NN335549, shortly passing from Perth and Kinross into Highland, following it for 4km across several more streams to reach Black Corries Lodge at the foot of Meall nan Ruadhag. Follow the signed diversion of the right of way round the lodge buildings to join the estate road for the last 5km to Kingshouse Hotel.
The middle section of this route is very boggy when wet, so it is best to do it in dry weather when the ground underfoot is reasonably firm.
OS Landranger 41 (Ben Nevis, Fort William & surrounding area) and either 42 (Glen Garry & Loch Rannoch area) or 51 (Loch Tay)
Heritage Information
This is an old right of way and drove road across Rannoch Moor. The inn at Kinghouse was a vital part of the droving network - Haldane notes that during the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, the innkeeper paid no rent and had an annual Government grant. Doire na h-Innes, a mile east of Rannoch station, was a drove stance since before the railway.
In 2017, this old route across Rannoch Moor featured in episode 3 Taming The Wild of the BBC series Grand Tours of Scotland's Lochs, along with Telford's route over the Black Mount. Keep an eye on the iPlayer as it is occasionally repeated.
