Survey Data Processor

Purpose of the role

CROW, the Catalogue of Rights of Way, records many rights of way and other paths across Scotland along with the details of over 5,000 signs that ScotWays and local authorities have installed since the 1880s. Accurate, up-to-date records help ScotWays to uphold the public right of access to land, and to ensure that problems, including damaged signposts are quickly dealt with. Your role is to process information and photographs from members of the public and volunteers who have undertaken surveys, and upload that information into CROW and our Photo Library.

The activities that you may be involved in include:

  • Checking submitted information about signposts and paths by members of the public and volunteers, against our records in CROW.
  • Updating our records with the received information, including photographs.
  • Adding photographs to ScotWays’ photo library, and tagging them with keywords and other information.
  • Entering details of issues, for example signs needing repaired or access obstructions on paths.
  • This role is home-based and can be done at any time that suits you.
  • Support from staff is available during office hours.

You will need:

  • A desire to improve outdoor access.
  • Attention to detail.
  • A suitable computer and broadband internet connection.
  • Competence with IT skills, including resizing images and copying data between applications.
  • A willingness to learn.

We will provide:

  • Training in use of our systems and the processes you’ll need to follow.
  • The training may be online by self-service webinar, over a video call, or in person.
  • ScotWays insurance cover for the work asked of you.
  • Reimbursement of agreed expenses.
  • The chance to make a different to outdoor access around Scotland.
  • Opportunities to take part in other volunteering activities and projects.

If you have some spare time and you’d like to help ScotWays with this role, please get in touch with Neil Birch, the Access Officer responsible for volunteering. He will arrange a chat with you and discuss how volunteering for ScotWays works.
