John Dow, 1922 - 2012

on .

ScotWays is saddened to hear of the recent death of John Dow, at the age of 89.

John Dow may be best remembered for participating in almost 100 sorties for the RAF during World War II, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Flying Medal. In later years, John became an active supporter of the Society, and he was out virtually every week making a point of walking rights of way in order to help safeguard their status. A keen participant in our Walks programme, he also cycled from Land's End to John o' Groats at the age of 72.

We are grateful to John for his contribution to our work.

ScotWays Walks Programme 2012

on .

The ScotWays Members' Walks programme 2012 will kick off on Wednesday 18th April in Muckhart. Have you signed up for a walk yet this year?

One of the perks of ScotWays membership is the Members' Walks programme. This year's selection of seven walks includes a Scottish Hill Tracks route and one near the Campsie Fells in our current Heritage Paths project area. Other gems in the programme include a coastal walk south of Dalbeattie in Galloway and, as the weather turns colder, a historical walk near Linlithgow incorporating a museum visit.

Places on these walks are available to ScotWays members only.  If you are not a ScotWays member, but are interested in our walks, then why not join us?

Numbers are strictly limited on all our walks, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Easter at ScotWays

The ScotWays office will close on Thursday 6th April 2012, and reopen on Tuesday 10th April 2012.

General rights of way and access enquiries: We are currently receiving a huge number of enquiries, and we are working hard to answer as many as possible before the Easter break. Unfortunately, we will not manage to respond to everyone, in which case we apologise for the delay in our response. If you are concerned not to have heard from us, please do feel free to drop us a line via post or email and we will be in touch once the office has re-opened

Rights of way searches for solicitors, land managers and developers: We are currently meeting our target of responding to all rights of way search requests within 5 working days of receiving them in our office, unless another deadline has been agreed. As our office will be closed over Easter, search requests received after 29th March may not be completed until after the holiday. If your search request is urgent, please contact us to discuss when we will be able to complete it.

Scottish Hill Tracks on Radio Scotland

on .

ScotWays is very pleased that this weekend's Out Of Doors on Radio Scotland included a piece about the new edition of Scottish Hill Tracks.

Peter Mackay, one of the co-ordinating editors, went for a walk along the Firmounth with Radio Scotland's Helen Needham. On their way they discussed both the history of the route and the history of our book. Helen, obviously a fan, said "Scottish Hill Tracks for me has been a really important book, it's an enticing book because it's full of promise".

The programme is available through the BBC's iPlayer until early on Saturday 4th February:

The whole programme is well worth a listen, but if you're short of time the Scottish Hill Tracks feature is between 1:02 and 1:09.

If you'd like to see what all the fuss is about, you can buy Scottish Hill Tracks through our website. Don't forget that if you're a ScotWays member, you can buy the book at a reduced rate.

The walk over the Firmounth is just one of the 344 routes described in Scottish Hill Tracks. For a little more detail on the history of the route, visit the Firmounth page on the Heritage Paths website -
