ScotWays is very sad to report the death on 7th February of Dr Donald Bennet OBE. Donald, a passionate lifelong mountaineer, was a Director of the Society from 1989, a dynamic and hugely industrious Chairman from 1992 to 2000, and Honorary President from 2000 to 2004. His work for ScotWays included the celebrations to mark our 150th anniversary, the revision and re-publication of Scottish Hill Tracks, sustained representation on the Access Forum, and the fostering of close relations with the Countryside Commission for Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage. Even after a disabling stroke in 2001, Donald kept up his regular attendance at AGMs in his wheelchair. Many members will also have benefited from Donald’s assiduous efforts in writing and editing guidebooks for the Scottish Mountaineering Trust – not least the very successful guides to the Munros and Corbetts. A fuller obituary and appreciation will appear in our Summer Newsletter.
We offer our deepest sympathy to Donald’s wife Anne, who has cared for him most selflessly throughout his years of disability, and to their family.
